• The first great commandment taught by Jesus is to love God with our all our hearts, souls and minds.

To love God with all our faculties is a choice to love life, and everything in it. Loving God is acknowledging that He made the heaven, earth and everything in between.

A natural byproduct of practicing this first commandment properly is finding out we know very little about the universe, how it operates, why things happen the way they do.

We approach each day with humility, gratitude and grace – seeking for understanding of how God wants us to proceed with our lives.

When we let this commandment be the guiding principle in our lives, we begin to understand the weight of each day, the importance of every moment, and the wisdom in keeping our word,

We begin to watch our words, thoughts and beliefs more purposefully.

Our intent for every interaction changes, because ultimately loving God with all our heart, all our mind and our whole souls is a choice to love ourselves, His crowning creation.

The best way to love and honor God is by acknowledging every one is made in His image. As such we have the power to create a worlds of our own, starting with the words we choose to live by and weighing the importance of today’s decisions as part of eternity…

  • I remembered a moment from my military training this morning.

Every learning exercise we do a crawl, walk, run. They emphasize certain criteria we are supposed to learn, and we are tested on in different ways.

This particular day we were learning rules of engagement, never fire unless fired upon. After receiving the instructions, being quizzed on it, it was time to go through some scenarios in the training simulator. We carried our M16’s and the large TV screen displayed different scenarios that would teach us, even under duress we were not supposed to fire our weapons unless someone was an immediate threat.

It started, we walk into a room, on the screen a terrorist is point a gun at the head of a screaming woman, using her as a body shield, his head was still exposed. We were shouting at him to put the weapon down, trying to descalate the situation, engrained in us that we couldn’t shoot because we were not actively being threatened.

Suddenly and before (most) could respond, the terrorist aimed his gun and started shooting at us. The scenario ended right after the terrorist started firing, presumably with a few casualties. Only one shot got off before the scenario ended, right as the terrorists gun was being pointed at my team. They replayed the scenario in slow motion, talking us through the proper response, then right before it ended, the shot registered in the replay – headshot by my rifle. If it were a real scenario, that shot would’ve ended the threat, and saved the team. We were the only ones (as far as I know) that would have passed.

Obviously it was meant to highlight the difficulties we were navigating, if someone had shot before the gun was pointed at us, there would’ve been severe repercussions… Breaking the rules of engagement were considered crimes, and in a real world scenario would in theory be punished by the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Ever since I can remember I’ve been a high strung individual, perceiving most everything as a threat. Whether it was my upbringing, my DNA, my belief system exacerbated by my military service, I’ve tended to be anxious around people, social situations, and did my best to avoided them, withdrawal (at least in my mind) was better than the alternative – potentially get into an altercation of one kind or another. The reason I remembered that scenario this morning was because there are some days when I’m in the gym and every little interaction, micro interaction bothers me… it feels similar to those training scenarios. Be on alert, there may be a threat, eliminate the threat if necessary.

The question I ask myself is – what is the actual threat? Is there really one? What is the likelihood that something which feels threatening will cause harm or turn to something negative?

The answer I received – if I view everything as a threat is the same thing as judging others. There is no way I can know the intentions of another, and while there are some which might have bad intentions, perhaps… a BIG perhaps, I perceive things as a threat because that is what I am…

We don’t see the world as it is, we see the world as we are. Judge not, lest ye be judged.

In certain scenarios it’s an advantage, but there is a time and a place… maybe, at least for now that time and place has passed.

It is time to allow a more peaceful perception to prevail.

  • A natural result of fear is entropy – a steady decay of what we consider order – life bringing and building forces.

If we submit to fear and doubt entropic forces drain our power and energy.

One of the reasons there’s less satisfaction in consumption and distractions is our soul was made to create…

And each day which goes by where we’re not contributing, creating or learning Truth…

Is a day where we’re going against the laws of the universe, losing energy, giving up a piece of our souls.

Instead of uniting with the source of all energy – and drawing from it – our energy is slowly depleted as we allow entropy to decay our lives.

We may try to remedy this by taking others’ energy or feeding off negative energy… This comes in the form of judgement, coercion, jealousy, violence, bitterness.

The fearful dwell in a miserable world – incapable of constructing a beautiful world because the steps towards that beautiful world are never taken, they are subjects of entropy. They become observers or takers of the lives of others because they do not remember the inherent life and love within themselves.

Good character can be built today by taking the steps towards life – faith, hope, love, charity etc. The fruits of the spirit. This is the way to fight off death, entropy, often guised as distraction, comfort and complacency.

The importance of taking action today can’t be overstated because action fights against the forces of entropy until eventually, our path becomes clear, we discover truth and we save ourselves. Once we are saved against the opposition, we can begin to save others.

  • Fear stands in direct opposition to progress, enlightenment, realms of peace, joy, love and charity.

Our environment is a reflection of what fears we’ve allowed to dominate our lives and what fears we’ve been able to face and overcome.

When we go to battle against the fears which are standing in the way of our dreams the veil between heaven and earth becomes thinner thus experiencing remarkable fulfillment reserved for the faithful actor. As we continually overcome the opposition of fear we become more capable of making our inner worlds an outward reality.

The deeper we feel the fear when we boldly dream, the more aligned the dream is with our life’s mission. We can spend our whole lives avoiding that which sets our soul on fire because of fear – a painstaking sacrifice of our souls every day – allowing fears to dictate our decisions.

Each day which passes is an opportunity to face fear, act in spite of it and overcome a limiting environment. Every day we succumb to fear i.e. allow distraction, inaction, and doubt to dominate the day, is a victory for adverserial forces which win we drift in purposelessness.

The ultimate result of fear is violence, disorder and chaos.

  • We make the choice of surrendering everyday. Either we surrender our agency to the will of God (goodness, hope, beauty, order, love, creation etc.) or we surrender to the imaginations of ego and all it’s accompanying ugliness.

Ego is perceived separation from the whole – an obsession with identity, differentiation, service of self. Decisions are made from the lens of the temporary, the fleeting – there is hardly anything lasting or fulfilling in the service of the ego. In this state we are subjects to fear which is often accompanied by hate, anger, jealousy, envy, shirking of responsibility. We surrender control of our lives to the whims of our environment, leaving us vulnerable to be exploited by ill intentions.

Surrender willingly to the will of God on the other hand – cooperation, beauty, goodness, service, creation etc. and our hearts are filled with love, forgiveness, grace, gratitude, hope, and inspiration.

Our agency has the potential to be hijacked if we allow our souls to live in service of the ego. There is no filling the hole of the ego, there is no satisfying or gratifying its perceived needs. This leads to perpetual consumption, distraction and a never ending pattern which keeps us enslaved to the powers that be…

Let us choose then to surrender to goodness, beauty and grace, taking responsiblity for ourselves and our families the abundance of the earth, with the power of God by our side.

    Additional thoughts on Surrender:

Surrender is a form of gratitude for the life we have – an acknowledgement that what we have is granted by our creator, and we can give all we have in return.

Surrender is faith that which is, was and will be works for our benefit if we allow it.

Surrender is acceptance in the inherent beauty of all life, living things and the preciousness of everything as it is.

    Surrender is courageous.

Surrender cures our sense of separation from each other, and reminds us of the pure love which underlies all life and creation.
